A Skilled Blogger Makes it Look So Simple

October
I don’t claim to be any more qualified than the next guy to judge great writing from just decent writing, but we bloggers get used to having and sharing strong opinions about things. I’ve just been enjoying reading through recent blog posts of one of my favorite bloggers — Ann Handley — and this post really made me take notice.
Man, she is SO GOOD!!
You other bloggers surely know where I’m coming from. When we find someone that somehow manages to stand out in this endless idea-tickertape we call the blogosphere, we really take notice. More importantly, we want to understand how she does it!
Well, I’m happy to report that after about 90 minutes of sifting through roughly ten Ann Handley blog posts this morning (with the help of three cups of coffee and a bowl of Count Chocula somewhere along the way), I have cracked her code.
So here it is. The 5 Things That Make Ann Handley Float to the Top of the Primordial Blogosphere Ooze
- Attitude - You really get the feeling through reading Ann’s blog that she is a “glass is half full” kinda person. This makes me more inclined to see what she is up to before some other bloggers. It’s often said that being controversial is a very effective blogging technique. Ann certainly proves that just the opposite can be true.
- Writing Skill - Like I said, I’m no authority, but I really think Ann must be considered to be a great writer. Reading her blog is somehow effortless. It’s like riding a bike slightly downhill. There’s not much work to it and you even get a cool breeze across your face.
- The Personal Touch - Ann makes it personal. She finds ways to share little snippets of her “real” life with her readers. Lessons are often triggered by something her kids said or did. We just naturally feel like she’s a friend over time because we know bits of her personal story.
- The Wonderful Pictures - No, I’m not talking about jpegs here. I’m talking about Ann’s ability to paint pictures with words. Who else, to convey the uniqueness of each of her children, would refer to “the Chex Mix of their unique genetic makeup?” Classic!
- ROI - In the midst of all of the above, she finds a way to deliver very useful information. I just can’t see a weak spot here.
Maybe the rest of us can use these keys to guide our own blog-writing. I suppose I have already tried to do so with this very post. I never would have divulged that I had Count Chocula this morning if I weren’t a believer in Ann’s rule # 3!

Seems to me you’ve coasted down the right path to being “skilled blogger” yourself - although I’d posit that, without the raw tools of creativity, talent and the ability to turn a clever phrase, most bloggers are dead in the water.
Case in point: “It’s like riding a bike slightly downhill.” Nice.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Burbanked. I just checked out your blog. Wow!! Talk about creativity!
And to think I was all proud of my Count Chocula references today.
Thanks for noticing!

Ann has created an incredible community at Daily Fix and it’s good to see that she’s now getting her just due as a blogger too. She’s definitely one of blogging’s ‘rising stars’!

Thanks for the comment Mack. I’m a big fan of your weekly Top 25 by the way. I always thought that was one of those “why didn’t I think of that?!?!” ideas.
Of course I only just started blogging a few months ago, so I’ll cut myself some slack I suppose.
Thanks again.

Now don’t we got us a dandy little blog-lovefest going on here?
Thanks for the compliment, Tony. And never, NEVER underestimate the power of a sturdy bowl of suger-enriched cereal (I’m a Cap’n Crunch man myself).

I love the Cap’n, but the roof of my mouth can’t really withstand the power of the crunch for extended periods of time.
As long as we’re all Marketing nerds and such, you all might find this interesting. I just heard the other day that General Mills hired the Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoonist to create a character (which of course ended up being the Cap’n) BEFORE any discussion of what the cereal would be.
I just thought it was fascinating. They created the advertising vehicle before they even created the product.
Any way, thanks again.

Thank you for the kudos Tony…and thanks to Alan and my brother Mack, too. I’m seriously flattered! (Slightly embarrassed, yes. But flattered nonetheless.)
And I agree — this is a very nice phrase, Tony: “It’s like riding a bike slightly downhill.”
Thanks, again…!

I’m glad you got to read it Ann. Kudos in the blogosphere are a bit difficult to come by. It’s nice to see those deserving of praise actually get to witness (and hopefully enjoy) that praise.
I’m not exactly sure how you will top “Chex Mix,” but I have no doubt you will.

An ‘I Digress’ Moment… Speaking of The Capn’… This sounds like a sick tip, but here’s your answer to the Capn’ Crunch mouth, or any rough {great} cereal for that matter… You know the Antacid chewables? It needs to be a ‘good flavor’ that goes well with the cereal aftertaste. All you need is one after your usual 5 bowls of sweet cereal goodness. It immediately puts-out the fire, moving focus to the now-bloated stomach.

Wow, Alan.
You’re like the Hints from Heloise of bachelor stoners. I, for one, salute you.
And what exactly IS a good flavor of antacid that goes with cereal aftertaste?

This is a great lesson in the value of the comments section. Someone should write a book just on comment section blurbs some day!

Ann has been an incredibly natural blogger, right from the start. She’s helped shape my own writing, since her former ClickZ days - and I have been honored to learn and learn and learn from her. This is indeed a lovefest. Thanks for pointing out her talent to the larger blogosphere, Tony.

My pleasure Andrea. Thanks very much for joining in!!

I also love reading Ann’s blogs. It has regularly made me think,
I think Ann’s blogs are “Simple and clear”. I really like it because of that.

I agree Balaji. I think that’s a sign of a good writer. It’s interesting to see how difficult it is to be a really good communicator. I think simplicity is probably a very important element.
Thanks for the comment!
